In addition to its union and StarNet affiliations, the other quality that sets Merrimac apart from its competition is its experience. Tom's father and uncles started the company right after World War II, giving the company 50 years of connections with industry professional and distributors. "My dad, Frank, is 81," Tom says, "and he has been the driving force behind this business forever." He's here every day - the first to arrive and the last to leave - and he'll never retire. His philosophy is just to work hard." For 20 years after achieving a certain success level Merrimac maintained a $2-million-per-year volume while it was run by the four brothers. When Tom came aboard in 1974 (having worked with the company since the age of 13), this volume was the comfortable norm. However, during the 1980s, when the housing market exploded, Merrimac worked on residential condominiums, bringing the company's income up ![]() Hours: Merrimac Tile And Stone ![]() another $5 million. This offered a bigger variety of work. "We started doing work everywhere - the Virgin Islands, Virginia and New Jersey. But in the past five or six years, travel has been cut back and we work mostly in a 60-to75 mile radius of Boston," Tom says. The technicians at Merrimac have an average of 15 to 20 years of experience. "We don't have a young force, but we have a very experienced force," Tom says. "All our workers are union trained and some are second generation. This benefits the customer because the job is going to be done right the first time."
