Focusing its services on the commercial market, Merrimac specializes in the educational sector, servicing the universities and colleges in Boston. This specialization began five years ago when the company won a contract on a large administration building at a Boston university. This million-dollar project turned out to be a natural fit for

Merrimac, and the company continues to hone its expertise in this market sector. Merrimac Tile is growing the Hard Surface Division with the addition, four years ago, of Ken Sasso of Sasso Stone. Ken was asked to join the team to assist with servicing the customers even more. Sasso now heads up the Hard Surface Division and is focusing his division on natural stone, marble and granite, but not to exlude ceramic. "The use of natural stone, granite and marble is becoming more and more popular these days." says Sasso, "and it's not just floors that it's becoming more popular with. The Hard Surface Division is getting more involved than ever, with horizontal and vertical surfaces of dimensional stone.

The company is also expanding its services with restoration and maintenance. We are incorporating restoration/maintenance for interiors and exteriors into our Hard Surface Division. Restoration brings existing stone back to life," he says. That's where Sasso Stone comes into play. "Sasso Stone has been doing restoration and maintenance for 16 years. I started Stone Inc. 25 years ago doing installation of stone; then in 1988 came Sasso Stone with restoration and maintenance. We have done restoration projects such as The Boston Public Library, Government Center, 50 Federal Street Lobby and Exchange Place Lobby."

"We're marketing this service now and have people promoting it," says Tom. "When we do a beautiful stone lobby, for example, we can offer a maintenance program to keep it looking new." It seems likely that this new area of expertise will take off, adding one more service to Merrimac's already strong repertoire.
